Metrosideros excelsa - Pohutukawa - New Zealand Xmas Tree

Two copper plates inked in five and two colours respecively have been etched to create this print of one of New Zealand's most popular coastal trees. Firstly the leaves, stem and buds are printed and the paper help in the intaglio press. The second plate, inked in deep crimson to blood-red, is exchanged in the exact position and the paper re-drawn through the press. The tips of the stamens and the nectar-filled calyx funnels are hand coloured as are some of the overlapping leaf detail.
